We begin our time in the book of Romans with an examination of one of the biggest problems for Christians: our tendancy to pretend that righteousness is something we perform rather than something given to us through our faith in Jesus Christ. Paul corrects us.
Bible Study Questions:
Observation
- What does Paul want to do in Rome?
- According to Paul, what can be clearly understood from what has been created?
- Is a man a Jew if he is circumcised?
Interpretation
- How does Paul choose to begin his letter to the Romans? What is Paul’s relationship to the Church in Rome? What is Paul’s main priority?
- Why did people start sinning? What are the consequences of sin? What does God do with those who follow sin?
- According to Romans, is sin just a problem for Gentiles? For Jews? For non-Christians? Why do you think Paul brings up sin at the beginning of the letter?
Application:
- What can we learn from Romans about how we can present the Gospel? How is Paul an example for how we should approach other believers?
- How can we cause people to blaspheme God? How easy is it to avoid thinking about our own sin and its consequences?
